2023 NADIIIAA Title IX Spotlight - Susan “Sue” Petersen Lubow

CLEVELAND - With the 50th anniversary of Title IX being this school year, NADIIIAA is looking to share stories from the NADIIIAA Community of family members and friends who inspired and paved the way for future athletes to be successful in collegiate athletics as a result of the passing of Title IX. Today's story features Susan "Sue" Peterson Lubow.

Spanning a career of 35 years at Kings Point, Susan "Sue" Petersen Lubow was one of the most accomplished administrators in the history of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA). She was hired in July 1979 as the women's physical education instructor and was named head coach of the men's swimming & diving program a month later, becoming the first female head coach of any varsity men's team at a U.S. Service Academy. Lubow then established a women's swimming & diving program on campus as she focused on growing the athletics programming for midshipmen.

In 1989, she was appointed to the director of athletics role, marking the first time that a female held the position of director of athletics at any of the U.S. Service Academies. In her 25 years as athletics director, she expanded Kings Point athletics to over 20 teams and helped develop the Blue & Gray Club, Athletics Hall of Fame, Blue & Gray Golf Classics, and numerous other traditions and awards.

Lubow was extremely active as an administrator at the conference, regional, and national levels throughout her career, and in 2014, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association and Foundation announced her induction into the USMMA Athletic Hall of Fame. Her career highlights can be seen below.

Career Highlights:
- First female Director of Athletics of a U.S. Federal Service Academy (1989-2014)
- First female head coach of any varsity men's team (swim coach) at a U.S. Federal Service Academy (Aug 1979)
- In 11 years, had a combined record of 148-67, 48 All-Americans Certificates, and a women's national championship
- NCAA DI, II, III - Secretary Rules Editor for 18 years
- USA Swimming – Head Manager for the 1998 World Swimming Championships & 2004 USA Short Course World Swim Team
- 1991 induction into the Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame
- 2009 induction into the New York Metropolitan Swimming Hall of Fame
- 2014 induction into the USMMA Athletic Hall of Fame
- 2015 induction into the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Hall of Fame
- NACDA Executive Committee Member

In In her leadership role that lasted 25 years, Lubow inspired numerous women to compete in athletics at a U.S. Federal Service Academy. She led the charge at USMMA to expand opportunities for women to compete in college, and she is without doubt the most important woman in the history of Kings Point athletics.
