National Association of Division III Athletics Administrators

Charlie Titus Receives Richard A. Rasmussen Lifetime Achievement Award

CLEVELAND - The National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA) is proud to announce Charlie Titus, the pioneer of the University of Massachusetts Boston athletics program, as the recipient of the 2020 Richard A. Rasmussen Lifetime Achievement Award.

The award, which is named after NADIIIAA's Executive Director, is presented to someone who has had a significant impact on Division III during the course of his/her career.

Titus, who retired June 30 as the vice chancellor for the division of athletics and recreation, special projects and programs, started at UMass Boston as the men's basketball coach in 1974 and added the title of athletics director in 1980.

During his tenure, the Beacons claimed seven national titles and were consistently among the top teams in the Little East Conference across multiple sports. In 1984, Titus called the first meeting of a select group of New England universities that led to the founding of the Little East Conference (LEC), and in 2012, he was in the inaugural class to be inducted into its hall of fame.

In addition to his commitment to the surrounding community in the city of Boston, Titus was also active on national committees within the NCAA, LEC and the ECAC.

While he has left a last mark on Beacon athletics, Titus was instrumental in the creation of the sports administration program at UMass Boston. He procured the largest donation, $5 million, from New Balance to fund the major.

Titus has been recognized by many governing organizations for his service and achievements, both as an administrator and a coach.

NADIIIAA looks forward to honoring Titus during the upcoming membership year.
