June 11, 2015 CLEVELAND -- The National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) is proud to announce the winner of the 2015 L. William Miller Award, as well as its 2015 Scholar-Athlete honorees. Gary Broadhurst, associate dean of athletics & physical education at Mohawk Valley Community College (N.Y.) will take home NATYCAA's highest honor with the L. William Miller Award, while Craig Smith of Ocean County College (N.J.) and Ian Man Wong of San Diego Mesa College (Calif.) have been tabbed as the Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year, respectively.
The honorees will be recognized at the NATYCAA Convention in Orlando at the NATYCAA Awards Luncheon scheduled for Monday, June 15.
"As an Association, NATYCAA is proud to recognize Gary Broadhurst, Craig Smith and Ian Wong with these awards," said NATYCAA President Tim Drain, director of athletics at Tyler Junior College. "It is one of our goals to highlight the best and brightest in two-year college athletics, and we are proud to be able to showcase their efforts."
Broadhurst is in his 36th year at Mohawk Valley Community College. Under his leadership the Hawks have captured 18 NJCAA National Championships while finishing second an additional 16 times; 55 Region III Championships with 48 runner-up finishes; and 103 Mountain Valley Conference Titles. Also during his tenure, MVCC student athletes have been selected as NJCAA All-Americans 409 times, 979 have been recognized as All-Region and 141 have been crowned individual NJCAA National Champions.
Broadhurst is the Women's Regional Director of Region III of the NJCAA. He previously served as the Chair of the region's Board of Directors for over 10 years. He is primary author of numerous policy statements, documents, and procedural operations during his tenure on the Board. Among these was the creation of the Region III Director's Cup; an award that recognized excellence and diversity in broad based intercollegiate programs. The Hawks have won the award twice and never finished lower than third place in the region. He has also has served as the treasurer for the Mountain Valley Collegiate Conference since 1998.
Smith, a soccer player with a 3.65 GPA, graduated cum laude with an Associate in Liberal Arts Degree, and was an academic all-region and all-conference selection in the process. He scored three goals and picked up four assists during his time on the field as a midfielder/defender for the nationally-ranked OCC program, earning him recognition as an NJCAA second team All-American. Smith also served two tours of duty in Iraq prior to beginning college. He plans to continue his studies at Georgian Court University (N.J.).
Wong, a swimmer with a 3.9 GPA, was named Pacific Coast Athletic Confrence Swimmer of the Year in 2014. She is a seven-time PCAC champion and was named an All-American for her efforts in the 50 and 100 breaststroke. Out of the pool, the team captain is the vice president of the International Students Club and the Chinese Culture Club, as well as a Senator in Associated Student Government. Wong is also very active in the community, assisting with projects such as the Coastal Habitat Restoration by the San Diego River Foundation, San Diego Mesa College Canyon Clean-up Day, and the Kids Expo.
