Virtual Convention Concurrent Workshop I: Diversity Track - White Allyship: Helping or Hurting |
White allyship and the development of co-conspirators within athletics departments are a crucial component of developing the supportive and necessary relationships to prioritize the often-overlooked mental wellness of Black student-athletes. The development of such allies and co-conspirators in White athletes, coaches, and administrators starts through an intentional commitment to supporting the wellness of the Black student-athlete. This involves the understanding and development of brave spaces, necessary shared language to be used in the formation of White ally development, understanding of systematic oppression and systems of racism which have existed and currently exist in sport and the unique mental health needs of the Black student-athlete. It is critical that actions and behaviors that are counterproductive to the pathway of allyship are confronted to allow for the development of a positive experience for Black student-athletes at historically White institutions. Speakers: Jen Fry, Jenfrytalks; Ryan Westman, New York University. |
