Accepting Keeling Scholarship Applications

CLEVELAND - The Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA) is pleased to announce the launch of the 13th Annual Rudy Keeling Scholarship, offering one $2,500 postgraduate scholarship to a minority administrator who plans to pursue an advanced degree with the intention of furthering his/her administrative pursuits within the intercollegiate athletics industry. This year, the scholarship will be presented with financial assistance of sponsor, Bob McCloskey Insurance.

As the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Commissioner, Rudy Keeling was the first African-American ever to head a major sports conference, a position he held from 2007 until his retirement in January 2013. He was also a former member of the MOAA Board of Directors.

To be considered for the Rudy Keeling Scholarship, a candidate must:
  1. Meet the federal guidelines for definition as a minority. These are as follows:
    • Black (Not of Hispanic origin) - All persons having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa.
    • Hispanic- All persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American, or other Spanish culture of origin, regardless of race.
    • Asian or Pacific Islander- All persons having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent or the Pacific Islands. This area includes, for example, China, India, Japan, Korea, the Philippine Islands and Samoa.
    • American Indian or Alaskan Native- All persons having origins in any of the original peoples of North America, and who maintain cultural identification through tribal affiliation or community recognition.
  2. Be pursuing opportunities in an advanced degree program and have a minimum of two years of full-time professional experience in athletics.
  3. Be planning to pursue a postgraduate course of study within 12-18 months of receipt of the scholarship.
  4. Have demonstrated leadership qualities on a college/university or community level.
In order to be considered for the scholarship, an applicant must submit the following:
  • Completed application form, including 500-word personal essay why you are deserving of the scholarship
  • Current resume
  • Recommendation from a colleague or supervisor within athletics (250-word maximum)
