NATYCAA Announces 2010 Scholar-Athlete Award Winners

May 18, 2010

CLEVELAND – The National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) is proud to announce the winners of the 2010 Scholar-Athlete Award, sponsored by Summit America Insurance. Anne Beinetti of Monroe Community College was selected as the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Kyle Richardson of Mohawk Valley Community College was chosen as the Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Anne Beinetti has a 3.96 grade point average majoring in fine arts and is also a National Junior College Athletic Association First Team All-Region soccer athlete. The midfielder led the Tribunes to a 2009 regional title, picking up NJCAA Region 3 Player of the Year, NJCAA First Team All-American and National Soccer Coaches Association All-Northeast selections along the way.

Beinetti also served as team captain, and did community service at the Rochester Presbyterian Home and the Flower City Work Camp. Beinetti is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and is currently considering attending the University of Rochester, Leslie University or Nazareth College, where she will continue to participate in soccer and complete her degree in art education.

Kyle Richardson is a sophomore from Rome, NY, majoring in sports medicine and has attained a 3.94 grade point average. He is a two-year starter on the baseball team as a centerfielder and a pitcher. He is this Mohawk Valley’s team captain and has helped lead his team to consecutive NJCAA Region III final four appearances. Richardson has virtually rewritten the college’s record book, placing either first or second in 13 individual offensive categories for single season and career marks. He is a 2010 All-Region selection and was named as the Mountain Valley Conference Player of the Year.

Richardson has been active in community service, serving as a Rotary guide for international students, clinician at youth baseball clinics, councilman on his parish’s church council, and has participated in toy drives for underprivileged children and Crop Walks to raise food for the hungry. He has received a scholarship to attend St. John’s University to compete in baseball and major in pre-med next year.

"The quality of nominees this year was outstanding, and the committee had a tremendous task in trying to separate just one athlete from each gender for this award," Scholar-Athlete Committee Chair and Miami Dade College Director of Athletics James Cox said. "We wish we could award and recognize several scholar-athletes. It was a difficult task and my thanks to the committee members and Summit America Insurance for sponsoring this very coveted and meaningful award."

Committee members included James Forkum of Santa Rosa Junior College, Calif., Kulwant Singh of De Anza College, Calif., and Gary Broadhurst of Mohawk Valley Community College, NY.

The winners will be recognized in June at the NATYCAA Convention in Anaheim at the NATYCAA Awards luncheon scheduled for Tuesday, June 22.

"Everyone at the two-year college level should be extremely proud of this year’s winners and honorable mention selections," NATYCAA President and Johnson County Community College Director of Athletics Carl Heinrich said. "The majority of our two-year college student-athletes are very serious about their academic pursuits, and these are the cream of the crop."

The NATYCAA Scholar-Athlete Award was first presented in 1992 and is sponsored by Summit America Insurance Services. It is given to the male and female student-athlete who best demonstrates outstanding accomplishment and leadership in academics, athletics and citizenship.
