Sears Directors' Cup Scoring Update for Division II

Cross Country Puts Institutions at the Top for the Division II Sears Directors' Cup

As of December 22, 1998

Cleveland, Ohio - As the fall season comes to a close, Adams State (Col.) leads the race for the Division II Sears Directors' Cup, presented by the nation's athletics directors.

Adams State has only scored in two of the seven sports contested thus far, but both were national titles, in women and men's cross country. The Grizzlies' 200 points top the standings. The Sears Directors' Cup is administered by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co.

Four of the top six institutions scored in both women and men's cross country, including second place Western State (Col.), which posted runner-up positions in both sports to earn 160 points. Following in third is North Dakota State, 15th and 8th in women and men's cross country and 130 points; and Edinboro (Penn.), in fourth with 120 points and a fifth and fourth in the respective cross country events. Also tied for fourth is Lynn (Fla.) and Northwest Missouri State.

These are the final fall standings and include the sports of women and men's cross country, field hockey, football, women's and men's soccer and women's volleyball. In addition to Adams State, winning national championships were Bloomsburg (Penn.) in field hockey; Northwest Missouri State in football; Lynn (Fla.) in women's soccer; Southern Connecticut State in men's soccer; and Hawaii Pacific in women's volleyball.

Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven for men and seven for women. Each national champion receives 100 points. There are four Sears Directors' Cup Awards, one to honor the institution with the best all-around athletics program in each of the NCAA's Divisions I, II and III and the NAIA. It is the first-ever cross-sectional all-sports national recognition award for both men and women. The winner of the award receives a trophy designed by Waterford Crystal, which tours the country, appearing at major men and women's events throughout the year.
