Azusa Pacific Narrows Simon Fraser's Lead for the NAIA Sears Directors' Cup

CLEVELAND - Defending champion Simon Fraser University (B.C.) closes the fall sports season in the lead in the race for the NAIA Sears Directors' Cup, presented by the nation's athletics directors. However, Azusa Pacific (Cal.) has narrowed that margin to 25 points. 

Simon Fraser, a four time winner of the Sears Directors' Cup, scored in five of the six fall sports, winning the national title in women's soccer. SFU also placed seventh in women's cross country, 12th in men's cross country, 17th in men's soccer and 31st in women's volleyball to record 275 points in the final fall Sears Directors' Cup standings. The Sears Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. It is administered by NACDA and sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co. 

Azusa Pacific also scored in five sports and tallied 250 points. Rounding out the top five are Indiana Wesleyan, third with 173 points; Georgetown (Ky.), fourth with 160 points; and Cedarville (Ohio) and Mobile (Ala.), tied for fifth with 153 points. 

These are the final fall standings and include the sports of women and men's cross country; football, women's and men's soccer; and women's volleyball. Winning national championships were Concordia (Cal.) in women's cross country; Life (Ga.) in men's cross country; Georgetown in football; Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) in men's soccer; and Dickinson State (N.D.) in women's volleyball. 

Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 12 sports -- six for men and six for women. Each national champion receives 100 points. 

Final fall sports standings follow. Please note that standings published midseason are unofficial standings. Official standings will be published upon the completion of the spring season. Codes are as follows: W. - women; M. - men; CC - cross country; FB - football; SOC - soccer; and VB - volleyball.
