Fall Championship Season Concludes With Western State In The Lead For The Division II Sears Directors' Cup

CLEVELANDÂ - Western State College (Col.) has maintained its lead to close out the 1999-2000 fall championship season on top of the Division II Sears Directors' Cup standings, presented by the nation's athletics directors.
Western State claimed the national title in men's cross country and placed second in women's cross country and ninth in women's volleyball to record 220 points. The Sears Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. It is administered by NACDA and sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co.
Adams State holds second place with 190 points. Rounding out the top five are California-Davis, third with 183 points; Edinboro (Pa.), fourth with 172 points; and Barry (Fla.), fifth with 170 points.
These are the final fall standings and include the sports of women and men's cross country, field hockey, football, women and men's soccer and women's volleyball. In addition to Western State, winning national championships were Adams State in women's cross country; Bloomsburg (Pa.) in field hockey; Northwest Missouri State in football; Franklin Pierce (N.H.) in women's soccer; Southern Connecticut State in men's soccer; and Brigham Young-Hawaii in women's volleyball.
Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven for men and seven for women. Each national champion receives 100 points. There are four Sears Directors' Cup Awards, one to honor the institution with the best all-around athletics program in each of the NCAA's Divisions I, II and III and the NAIA. It is the first-ever cross-sectional all-sports national recognition award for both men and women. The winner of the award receives a trophy designed by Waterford Crystal, which tours the country, appearing at major men and women's events throughout the year.
Final fall standings follow. Please note that standings published midseason are unofficial standings. Official standings will be published upon the completion of the spring season. The sports codes are as follows: W.CC - women's cross country; M.CC - men's cross country; FH - field hockey; FB - football; W.SOC - women's soccer; M.SOC - men's soccer; and W.VB - women's volleyball.
