CLEVELAND -- The Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association (D2 CCA) has requested the NCAA Division II Football Committee and NCAA Division II Championships Committee expand the NCAA Division II football postseason from 28 teams to 32 teams as soon as the 2025 season, per the unanimous support of D2 CCA members.

Additionally, D2 CCA is broadly supporting an adjustment to the NCAA Division II football schedule to align with the NCAA Division III and FCS Championship games now slated for January, with the addition of a Week 12 to the regular season schedule.

"Division II Football Commissioners continue to be unanimous that the NCAA Division II Football Championship postseason field should expand from 28 to 32, preferably this fall, as stated in our letter to the NCAA Division II Football Committee and D-II Championships Committee," said D2 CCA President Reid Amos, Commissioner of the Mountain East Conference.

"Additionally, every other level of NCAA Football is now crowning its champion in January. As of 2024, this translates to Division II providing our student-athletes with less rest and recovery time than any other division within what is now the most compressed schedule. Our D2 CCA football commissioners are approaching unanimity on leading efforts to pursue adding a 'Week 12' to the D-II football regular season, which would also take advantage of a series of opportunities available by aligning our D-II Football Championship Game with FCS and D-III in early January."

The expansion of the NCAA Division II football postseason would feature eight teams from each Super Region. In the past two years, the D-II Championship Committee has supported the expansion of Women's Lacrosse, Women's Field Hockey, and Men's Lacrosse. Expansion of the D-II Football postseason field will resolve Division II Championships policy Automatic Qualifier (AQ) percentage concerns, provide appropriate access per Super Region, shift football toward the median and mean of D-II team sports access ratios, eliminate byes, and provide additional bracketing flexibility for the committee.

About D2 CCA: Initiated in 1992 to promote its member conferences and institutions, D2 CCA has made its mark in providing a united front for NCAA Division II athletics.
