Central Washington's Huerta Named D2CIDA Women's Basketball Division II Player of the Week

AUGUSTA, GA -- Central Washington's Valerie 'Sunshine' Huerta has been named the women's basketball Division II Player of the Week by the D2CIDA. Huerta earns the honor for the second time this season, becoming the first player to do so.

The sophomore guard from Whittier, Calif., averaged 35 points per game in two wins for the Wildcats, shooting 52 percent from the field and 57 percent from 3-point range. She set the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) single-game scoring record with 46 points against Walla Walla, breaking a record that had stood since 2008. She set another conference record with 18 made field goals in that game. The 46 points is the second-most in a single game in NCAA Division II this season, as is the 18 made field goals.

Huerta opened the week with 24 points, hitting 4-for-7 3-pointers, in a win over Whitman. For the week, she added 3.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game. She is currently second in the GNAC in scoring and third in free-throw percentage and 3-point percentage.

Central Washington improved to 10-1 on the season and is ranked No. 16 nationally by the D2SIDA and No. 22 by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).

The Division II Player of the Week is selected by the Division II Conference Information Directors Association (D2CIDA). A complete list of weekly award winners can be found here.
