Valerie 'Sunshine' Huerta of
Central Washington University (CWU) has been named the D2CIDA Division II Player of the Week for November 14-20. The sophomore point guard from Whittier, Calif., averaged 27.5 points per game in two games at the Westminster Tournament, shooting 65 percent from the field and 67 percent from 3-point range.
She opened with 37 points on 14-for-19 shooting against MSU Denver, hitting 6-of-7Â 3-pointers in a 95-75 victory. She followed that with 18 points on 6-for-12 shooting against Westminster of Utah. For the week she added 3.5 assists, 1.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game.
The 37 points tied Huerta for the 10th-best single-game performance in GNAC history and is currently the fourth-highest single-game total in NCAA Division II this season.
In four games this season, Huerta is averaging 20.3 points per game while shooting 50 percent from the field, 52.9 percent from the 3-point line and 92.3 percent from the free-throw line for the undefeated Wildcats.
