DI-AAA ADA Announces Gary Cunningham Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient

The Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association (DI-AAA ADA) is proud to announce Peg Bradley-Doppes, former director of athletics at the University of Denver, as the 2020 Gary Cunningham Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.

"I am humbled to be a recipient of the Gary Cunningham Lifetime Achievement Award. Knowing Gary and the quality of the previous recipients, in addition to knowing many of the outstanding, incredibly passionate, dedicated and talented current and former athletics directors worthy of this award, I am honored to be selected by my peers," stated Bradley-Doppes.  "I have been blessed to be directly involved in the development and growth of the University of Denver's athletics over the last 15 years. I am proud to have been part of that incredible experience. This award is recognition of the leadership of DU and the tremendous staff I have been blessed to work with and for."

Bradley-Doppes is a 38-year veteran of NCAA Division I programs, where she served as a head coach for 11 years and an athletics administrator for 27 years. Bradley-Doppes was the DI-AAA ADA President during the 2013-14 season. Most recently, she served as the Vice Chancellor of Athletics and Recreation and Ritchie Center Operations at the University of Denver. Bradley-Doppes was appointed to the helm of the Pioneers' athletics department in 2005, after serving in the same position at UNC Wilmington from 1999-04.

She guided the Pioneers to eight NCAA championships, 10 DI-AAA All-Sports Trophies, 109 conference titles, 75 Coach of the Year honors and numerous national rankings during her 13-year tenure. Prior to her time as an administrator, Bradley-Doppes was a successful volleyball head coach at the University of Michigan, University of North Carolina and Miami University, compiling a 304-144 (.679) record with four conference championships and three Coach of the Year honors.

The Cincinnati, Ohio native is a graduate of the College of Mount St. Joseph where she received her bachelor's degree in health and physical education in 1979. She went on to receive her master's degree in health and physical education from Miami University in 1981.

Her distinguished career in intercollegiate athletics includes over two decades of NCAA committee service on the Management Council, Division I Women's Basketball Committee, Committee on Women's Athletics, Division I Volleyball Committee, Peer Review Team, Olympic Sports Liaison Committee and the NCAA Division I Leadership Council. She also previously served as NACDA Treasurer and was a member of the NACDA Executive Committee. In 2019, she was inducted into the NACDA Hall of Fame.

"We are excited to bestow our Association's most prestigious honor to Peg," stated Gary Cunningham Lifetime Achievement Award Committee Chair and Director of Athletics at Florida Gulf Coast University, Ken Kavanagh. "Like our previous honorees, she certainly personifies what the award represents and fits in extremely well with the tremendous group of prior recipients. A valued contributor to the DI-AAA ADA's development since its inception, Peg served our intercollegiate athletics profession with distinction for decades in a variety of roles. In turn, she positively impacted countless student-athletes and staffers that she worked alongside daily, as well as the many others for whom she has been a terrific mentor and valued colleague."

Due to the cancellation of the 2020 NACDA Convention, Bradley-Doppes will be formally recognized in front of her peers at the 2021 NACDA Convention in Orlando next June.
