D2 CCA Announces 2017-18 Scholar-Athletes of the Year

CLEVELAND - The Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2 CCA) is proud to recognize Kami Norton (Angelo State University) and Andrea Bazzoli (Drury University) as the 2017-18 D2 CCA Scholar-Athletes of the Year.

Norton maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA as a kinesiology major, while Bazzoli maintained an identical 4.0 GPA as a psychology and sociology double major. In total, 17 regional scholar-athlete award winners were selected by the D2 CCA. Norton and Bazzoli were selected as 2017-18 D2 CCA Scholar-Athletes of the Year from a field of eight women's regional finalists and nine men's regional winners.

"Andrea and Kami are true champions and the D2 CCA is proud to recognize their incredible accomplishments and honor them as Scholar-Athletes of the Year," said D2 CCA President Julie Ruppert, commissioner of the Northeast-10 Conference. "As if earning individual national championships in the pool and on the track weren't enough, both Andrea and Kami also maintained unblemished academic records over their illustrious careers. Simply put, they represent the absolute best within Division II and we are thrilled to honor them with our Association's highest recognition for academic and athletics excellence. Not only are the Great Lakes Valley and the Lone Star Conferences proud to call them their own, so too is the D2 CCA. Congratulations!"

Representing Lone Star Conference, Norton is an Angelo State University track and field standout. Hailing from Albany, Texas, Norton made a name for herself at Angelo State. This past year, Norton helped carry ASU to its highest finish at the outdoor NCAA Championships since 2010; ninth place. She has won numerous conference titles in the multi events , and garnered multiple awards off the track such as Academic Player of the Year (indoor and outdoor) and Female Indoor Field Athlete of the Year. During her tenure, Norton has helped the Rams to seven consecutive top 25 finishes at the indoor and outdoor track and field championships. She has won both indoor and outdoor national titles in the heptathlon cementing her position as one of the nation's top athletes. In addition to her athletic prowess, Norton excels in the classroom as well, maintaining a 4.0 and earning a bachelors degree in kinesiology.

A native from Peschiera Del Garda, Italy, Bazzoli has been a juggernaut in the water. Bazzoli holds the Great Lakes Valley Conference record in the 100-meter breaststroke, 200 medley relay, and garnered multiple team and individual accolades. Not only has Bazzoli shattered records in the pool, he has also claimed countless honors from the GLVC and NCAA. At the NCAA Championships, Bazzoli has shined. He is an NCAA Champion in the 100 breaststroke; he's received the Elite 90 Award, earned fifth place in the 200-medley relay and ninth in the 200 breast. As for the GLVC, Bazzoli has been a Council of Presidents Academic Excellence Award recipient, a three-time all-academic honoree, Male Student-Athlete of the Year and a two-time Brother James Gaffney Distinguished Scholar. In addition to his trophy case of accomplishments, Bazzoli boasts a perfect 4.0 as a psychology, sociology double major.
